"The problem was that my mother, like most women of her generation, has only been briefly education. In her era, a girl's sole purpose was to find a husband".
When Firoozeh has to go to the school for the first time and bring her mother it is humiliating for her because her mom doesn't know the language and she doesn't know her geography. I think there are always times in our lives that our parents humiliate us for one reason or another and so I could relate to Firoozeh. Like Sundara, Firoozeh, knows a lot more than her mom because she can speak English and her mom cannot. The roles are changed between mother and daughter and so that must be challenging. In my mom's era, girls were also more encouraged to find a husband than pursue an eduacation, however, I do think my mom received at least a high school education whereas Firoozeh's mom's education probably didn't go beyond elementary school.
